Values

PURPOSE
The Inter-university Disability Issues Association is an association of professionals

promoting accessible education at universities in Ontario. Through the highest

standards of ethical practice, we support our members in providing innovative

services for students with disabilities in a manner that respects individual student

needs and academic integrity.

Principle I – Respect for and Dignity of Individuality

IDIA members respect the dignity, worth, and individuality of all people, and

realize the intrinsic value in all individuals, regardless of gender, race, disability,

sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, religion (creed), nationality, marital status,

age, socio-economic status, or any other preference or personal characteristics,

conditions or status.

Principle II – Responsible Practice

IDIA members engage in responsible practice. Members practice within the limits

of their competence, and seek consultation when appropriate. They adhere to

the requirements of privacy and Human Rights legislation in Ontario, and if they

are members of regulated health professions, they also adhere to legislation,

codes of ethics, and standards of practice that are associated with their

professional colleges or certifying boards. Members respect the academic

integrity of courses and programs of study when recommending and arranging

academic accommodation for students.

Principle III – Student Rights and Responsibilities

IDIA members are knowledgeable of the rights and responsibilities of students

with disabilities with respect to their academic institution and the Province of

Ontario. It is therefore important that IDIA members maintain an awareness of

the relevant policies in place at their respective universities, in addition to current

federal and provincial disability-related legislation.

i) Student Empowerment

IDIA members recognize that students are entitled to make independent

academic and life decisions. As disability service providers, they support

and encourage students in reaching their academic potential. IDIA

members facilitate student success through the provision of information

and tools, without compromising students’ autonomy and dignity.

ii) Student Involvement

IDIA members acknowledge that students are active participants, who

share the responsibility for their education and academic experience.

Principle IV – Professional Development

Ongoing professional development contributes to the quality of service provided

by IDIA members. They are committed to competency in all aspects of their

professional domain. Self-knowledge, critical analysis, and impartiality are

essential to maintaining trust and integrity with students, faculty, and university

administration.
